Ithaca, New York | Scientists at Cornell University have developed a breakthrough test that helps farmers identify early signs of inflammation in cows, allowing for quicker treatment and better health outcomes.
The test works by measuring specific proteins, known as cytokines, that rise when cows are becoming unwell. By detecting inflammation early, farmers and veterinarians can begin treatment before symptoms become serious—resulting in healthier cows and increased milk yields.
Currently in the research phase, the test is expected to be widely available to farmers in the near future. It has already shown promise in improving herd health, minimizing financial losses, and boosting productivity.
The project is supported by both the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the New York State government, as part of efforts to modernize livestock care and enhance food security through scientific innovation.
